The SVS School for English is a small, family-run English school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They are a registered charity that was set up in 2006 with the aim of enabling Sri Lankans and expatriates living in Sri Lanka to develop vital, empowering English language skills. About the position

Location: Colombo, Sri Lanka Job type: Volunteer teaching Starting dates: They look for volunteer teachers throughout the year and accept applications on a rolling basis. However, term dates usually run as follows:
  • Term 1: early January to early April

  • Term 4: early October to mid-December

Volunteer teachers will teach 3 classes a day, e.g. 8.30 AM, 11 AM and 6 PM. Class size: Classes are kept small, to better facilitate interaction and communication between students and teachers. The maximum number of students per class is 24 to 26 students. Students: Most students are aged 18 and over, although occasionally students as young as 16 enroll after finishing secondary school. Many students are from rural areas attending university or working in Colombo and they need English to further their prospects. They also have a large student population of Buddhist monks. Most of their students are Sri Lankan, however, there are students from Korea, Japan, China, India, Thailand, Taiwan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Turkey, the Middle East….the list goes on!

About this position

  • They enroll their employees in the company's social insurance system (shakai hoken), including subsidized health insurance and pension.
  • They usually pay a full and not pro-rated salary for months with school holidays, such as April, July, December, January & March, while they guarantee at least 65% of the regular salary for August during the long summer vacation. They do not force their employees to take a pay cut in other months to get paid for August. Of course, those that work a full schedule in August get paid a full salary then too.
Joytalk also provides ongoing teacher training with workshops held a number of times throughout the year, including prior to the start of the assignment and reimbursement for work transportation costs. They support their ALTs not only in teaching, but also in all aspects of life in Japan, 24 hours a day, including problems of any size, negotiations, accidents, emergencies, etc.
