What are apostilles (and e-apostilles)?
An apostille is an official certificate issued by the government to verify the authenticity of a document.
Some countries may require you to get your TESOL/TEFL and other documents apostilled if you plan to use them towards your work visa application. This requirement is often because they want another government to first confirm the authenticity of the document before they accept it.
Traditionally, apostilles could only be applied to hard copy documents. However, it’s now possible to get an e-apostille applied to electronic documents such as your soft copy TESOL/TEFL, TEAL, TEYL, TEOL, or Level 5 Diploma in TESOL certificate.
Why choose an e-apostille?
Traditional apostilles are applied to the back of your hard copy certificate. They look great when presented to schools, but they can also be expensive and can take some time to process.
This is because the hard copy certificate must be produced and shipped to a solicitor, then shipped to the FCDO, then shipped back to your agent, and finally shipped to your delivery address. This often takes around 3 weeks and can cost up to $200.
An e-apostille can cost as little as $120 and be done in 3 working days.
Which apostille type is right for you?
The type you choose could be down to your own personal preference and the preference of your employer/government authority.
If you plan to get a hard copy of your certificate, then it could be good to get a physical apostille added to it. If you aren’t planning to get your hard copy, or if you’re in a rush, then you could consider an e-apostille.
An e-apostille is a relatively new digital form of authentication. They’re fast becoming a popular option, but not every employer or authority accepts them yet. It may be useful to check with your employer or government authority to confirm that they accept an e-apostille before placing your order.
