SVS School for English — Volunteer English Teaching in Sri Lanka

The SVS School for English is a small, family-run English school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They are a registered charity that was set up in 2006 with the aim of enabling Sri Lankans and expatriates living in Sri Lanka to develop vital, empowering English language skills. SVS School is now looking for committed, open-minded individuals with a passion for helping students develop their written and spoken English language skills. About the position

Location: Colombo, Sri Lanka Job type: Volunteer teaching Starting dates: They look for volunteer teachers throughout the year and accept applications on a rolling basis. However, term dates usually run as follows:
  • Term 1: early January to early April
  • Term 2: mid-April to end June
  • Term 3: early July to end September
  • Term 4: early October to mid-December
Schedule: Classes run Monday to Friday from 8.30 AM to 10.30 AM, 11.00 AM to 1.00 PM, 3.30 PM to 5.30 PM and 6.00 PM to 8.00 PM. Volunteer teachers will teach 3 classes a day, e.g. 8.30 AM, 11 AM and 6 PM. Class size: Classes are kept small, to better facilitate interaction and communication between students and teachers. The maximum number of students per class is 24 to 26 students. Students: Most students are aged 18 and over, although occasionally students as young as 16 enroll after finishing secondary school. Many students are from rural areas attending university or working in Colombo and they need English to further their prospects. They also have a large student population of Buddhist monks. Most of their students are Sri Lankan, however, there are students from Korea, Japan, China, India, Thailand, Taiwan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Turkey, the Middle East….the list goes on!

Requirements:

All English course teachers are expected to bring the enthusiasm, zest, and passion to be the best for their students. To volunteer with SVS School for English, you also need to meet the following requirements:
  • You must be a native speaker of English and/or have an excellent standard of English.
  • Graduated from university and/or be certified in teaching English as a foreign language and/or have at least 3 or more years of work experience in any industry.
  • Be able to commit to at least 6 months of volunteering at SVS School for English.
  • Volunteer English teachers will need a visa to enter Sri Lanka, and the school assists in making the necessary arrangements to procure a visa.

ECC — Teach English in Japan

  • Scope: Full-time
  • Contract length: Contracts are aligned to finish with their academic year at the end of March and are eligible for renewal.   • Start date: ECC has potential start dates year-round
  • Students: Their students range from pre-school age to retirees. They come with a wide range of backgrounds, study goals, and interests.
  • Classes: They offer a wide range of courses to suit all ages and levels. Young learner class sizes are small, up to ten students, and adult classes may have as many as twelve students.
  • Teaching schedule: 35-hour work (not including 45-minute daily breaks). Five work days and two rest days fixed across the academic year. Most classes are taught afternoons, evenings, and weekends. A typical seven-hour work day consists of a mixture of classes for both children and adults of various levels and about 5-6 hours of class time.

About this position

Benefits

  • The salary will depend on the position, as well as location, qualifications, teaching experience and Japanese language skills and as such, will range between 210,000 and 250,000 yen per month, which equates to 2,446,500 yen to 3,000,000 yen per full contracted year. A stable monthly salary will be set, which is not a daily pay system.
  • They pay a capped monthly transportation allowance that will vary depending on work conditions. This is paid on top of the salary, not included as part of it.
  • They offer paid leave from the start of employment, if the contract is longer than 6 months.
  • They have the flexibility to allow paid leave to be used for sick days.
  • They can handle all visa related issues on your behalf at the immigration office so there is no need for you to take time off to be there.
  • They enroll their employees in the company's social insurance system (shakai hoken), including subsidized health insurance and pension.
  • They usually pay a full and not pro-rated salary for months with school holidays, such as April, July, December, January & March, while they guarantee at least 65% of the regular salary for August during the long summer vacation. They do not force their employees to take a pay cut in other months to get paid for August. Of course, those that work a full schedule in August get paid a full salary then too.
Joytalk also provides ongoing teacher training with workshops held a number of times throughout the year, including prior to the start of the assignment and reimbursement for work transportation costs. They support their ALTs not only in teaching, but also in all aspects of life in Japan, 24 hours a day, including problems of any size, negotiations, accidents, emergencies, etc.

VUS is one of the biggest language centers in Vietnam, with campuses in Ho Chi Minh City and across the country. About the Position:

Location: Vietnam Teaching schedule: As with most language centers who teach English in Vietnam, they mainly operate outside of regular school and work hours. The majority of their classes take place at weekends and during weekday evenings, although they do also run some daytime classes too. Teachers on full-time agreements can expect between 20-25 hours per week. However, if their location is further away from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, they can generally expect more hours. Duties:
