How to authenticate your certificate for use in Vietnam

Certain countries might require additional verification before allowing you to use your certificate.

Some countries will require certificates to be authenticated before they can be used with visa applications. In particular, Vietnam is one country that generally requires certificates to go through this process.

For Vietnam, the process would involve having your documents notarized by a Notary Public, then legalized by the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), then finally taken to the Vietnamese embassy and authenticated. It’s quite a complicated process, but can be made much easier with tried and tested services.

If you wish to get the certificate authenticated for use in either of these countries, you’d follow these steps:

1. Purchase the Vietnam authentication service through this site here: Hague Apostille – Vietnam Attestation Service – For World TESOL Academy Graduates. This link will give you additional discounts that are reserved for World TESOL Academy graduates. There are other companies aside from Hague Apostille, but we’d recommend them as they provide a fast and dependable service.

2. After this, you would need to order the hardcopy of your certificate from our site here: https://www.worldtesolacademy.com/ordering-your-certificate/

When ordering your certificate you should put the Hague Apostille address from the order form at their website.

3. We’ll then get your certificate printed, packaged, and shipped to Hague Apostille. They’ll have it processed and taken to a notary public to be notarized. After this, it will be sent to the FCDO and be legalized, and finally it will be taken to the Vietnamese embassy for authentication.

The process can take a few weeks to complete, so it’s best to start early if you’re hoping to finish quickly and head overseas.

What does an authenticated TESOL/TEFL certificate look like?

After finishing the authentication process, your certificate will have several important stamps and notices attached to the back of it. These stamps show that your certificate has passed through notarisation – being approved by a Notary Public, legalization/apostillation from a local government department, and then authentication by the embassy of the destination country.

Here’s what each of the notices are:

  1. Notarization stamp – approval from a Notary Public
  2. Apostille – approval from the British government
  3. Chinese/Vietnamese authentication – approval from the Chinese/Vietnamese governments

Only appropriately registered and accredited TESOL/TEFL courses will be able to go pass through this entire process and gain all of the necessary stamps of approval.

Why does Vietnam require authentication?

Several popular teaching destinations require authentication of some kind – whether that’s just an apostille or a full three-step authentication like with Vietnam.

This process helps to ensure that the documents submitted meet the requirements specified by Vietnamese immigration authorities. By verifying the documents, the authorities can assess the applicant’s eligibility and determine whether they meet the criteria for entry into Vietnam.

Attestation also helps to verify the identity of the applicant and the accuracy of the information provided. It prevents fraudulent activities such as identity theft or the submission of forged documents, which could potentially compromise national security or lead to illegal immigration.

How long does Vietnamese TESOL authentication take?

From start to finish, the process can take between 2-4 weeks on average, though times can vary.

It will take a few days for us to produce your hard copy certificate, have it embossed and then shipped to Hague Apostille. Once they receive it, they’ll start working on it as quickly as possible, but it does take some time. They’ll need to send it to get apostilled/legalized by the FCDO (government department). The FCDO will return the legalized document to Hague Apostille, it’ll then be taken to the Vietnamese embassy for attestation, and it’ll get collected from the embassy several days later. Finally, the certificate will need to be mailed to your final delivery address.

If you’re planning to teach English in Vietnam, you’ll want to plan accordingly as authentication can take some time.

How do I get my TESOL authenticated for use in China?

If you wish to get your TESOL certificate authenticated for use in China, you simply need to get it apostilled. This is a shorter process as it doesn’t require taking the certificate to the Chinese embassy for attestation.

You can follow this guide instead: How to legalize/apostille your TESOL certificate.

Note: if you have already been through the Vietnamese authentication process you don’t need to do anything else to use your certificate in China. The Vietnamese process will already include having your certificate legalized/apostilled. This means you’ll be able to also use it in China.
