Interac - Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) Positions in Japan

Founded in 1972, Interac is Japan’s largest private provider of professional foreign teachers to the Japanese government through its ALT program. Interac is also a significant player in providing professional teachers for commercial and government organizations. Interac’s teachers, working in the Japanese school system, enrich children’s lives by delivering interactive and exciting English lessons, while also sharing their knowledge of English and communication skills, and giving insights into other cultures. They are now looking for more English teachers who wish to teach in Japan.

About the position

Their ALTs (Assistant Language Teachers) are a part of elementary, junior high, and high school communities all across Japan. In your schools, you’ll work with Japanese teachers to facilitate smooth presentation of the school’s assigned English curriculum. This may include preparing worksheets, model pronunciation and reading, demonstration of target language dialogs and similar tasks. In addition, ALTs are commonly asked to review and comment on students’ homework notebooks and other written work, as well as conducting one-to-one or small group progress assessments. But the heart of the ALT position is so much more – aside from just being a language instructor you are also a cultural ambassador. Sharing your own background and culture becomes a canvas for using English and gives meaning to what your students are studying.
  • Start date: starting year-round (Most in April)
  • Teaching schedule: Weekdays between 8:00am and 5:00pm. (Commuting expenses reimbursed)
  • Teaching Hours: Typically three to five 45-minute classes per day
  • Student ages: Elementary school students are between 6 and 12 years old. Junior high school students are between 12 and 15 years old. High school students are between 15 to 18 years old.
“ALT” is a title coined by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to describe native-level speakers of English working in Japanese classrooms. As an Interac ALT, you are not a member of the schools’ staff but an employee of Interac, and therefore, you work under the guidance of Interac.

  • Have at least a bachelor’s degree in any subject from an accredited university
  • Be a team-player that is professional, flexible, cheerful, and energetic
  • Be under 60 years of age
  • Provide a criminal background check
While not required, it helps your chances if you:
  • Hold a driver’s license
  • Have teaching experience

Na'atik Language and Culture Institute - English Teacher 2024-25 School Year

Na'atik Language and Culture Institute is a nonprofit intercultural language school located in the historic heartland of the Maya Resistance in southern Mexico. They offer immersive and online language programs in Spanish, Maya, and English through authentic intercultural experiences with the local community. They are now looking for an adventurous and independent spirit to join their team.

About the position

Location: Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mexico Position: English teacher Date: The position will begin mid-end of August 2024 (the exact start date will be determined at the time of hire) Purpose of Role: To teach high-quality English language through classes, our English language library, extracurricular activities and intercultural events to the people of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and its surrounding Maya communities to foster cross-cultural education and understanding. General Responsibilities:
  • Plan and implement a regular schedule of small group English classes for students of all ages and levels ranging from beginner to advanced.
  • Work with the Na’atik librarian for library visits.
  • Work with Na’atik’s Spanish and Maya Immersion Program to deliver intercultural activities.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of special extracurricular events and activities throughout the year.
  • Maintain good relations with students, their families, and all members of the Na’atik community.
  • Work in collaboration with other English teachers and other Na’atik staff members to achieve the mission of Na’atik.
Specific duties:
  • Plan all lessons and develop materials and activities.
  • Conduct 14 age and level-appropriate classes, approximately 23 contact hours, per week.
  • Provide parents and students with quarterly assessments of student achievement.
  • Conduct regular assessments of student learning and use assessments to improve instruction and assist student learning.
  • Participate in all local promotions of the English Language Program.
  • Collaborate in the planning, preparation, and execution of Na’atik special events, including but not limited to Halloween, Primary Camp Day, Teen Field Trip, and Year End Festival.
  • Plan and coordinate class parties for Christmas, Children’s Day, and other holidays throughout the year.
  • Collaborate with the School Librarian and other staff members to facilitate library activities and regular circulation of library materials with Na’atik students.
  • Collaborate with the immersion Spanish and Maya (MaS) team to organize students for participation in intercultural activities.
  • Welcome and include MaS students to English classes to foster cross-cultural education and understanding.
  • Write and submit end-of-year handover notes to the Manager.
  • Work with the Manager for international PenPal project student participation.
  • Work with other members of the English Language Program to maintain an orderly work environment.
  • Attend all training, orientations, and professional development sessions.
  • Attend and participate in all required staff meetings.
  • Work with the Manager and Reception to monitor student attendance and retention.
  • Work with the Manager regarding student behavior and promote good citizenship among the student body.

Qualifications requirements

To qualify for the position, you are expected to meet the following requirements:
  • Native English speaker or equivalent.
  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited university.
  • A TEFL/CELTA/TESOL teaching certification.
  • 1 year of classroom teaching experience.
  • Willingness to help organize and participate in special events, activities, and field trips.
